Orientation workshop: Effective Teaching, Focused Research, Impactful Extension and Dedicated Training (Posted on : 09/07/2024)
- Inaugural session.
Orientation was conducted to train the newly recruited Scientists in the Department of genetics and plant breeding. The expert Dr Gopal Krishnan S, Head division of genetics ICRA IARI New Delhi was invited to enlighten young breeders of the university. During the inauguration function, along with expert Dr Gopal Krishnan S, Head division of genetics ICRA IARI New Delhi, Dr A. K Singh, Director of research, Bau Sabour, Dr A. K Saha, Dean Agriculture, BAU, Sabour, Dr P. K Singh, Chairman, Department of plant breeding and genetics, BAC Sabour, Dr S. N Roy, Principal BAC, Sabour and Anshuman Kohli, Director IQAC, BAU Sabour were present.Dr P. K Singh. Gave a formal welcome to all the dignitaries in his humble world.
Dr A. K Singh, Director of research addressed the orientation programme. Suggested the new scientists to imbibe the knowledge of expert. He emphasised the importance of genetics and plant breeding in varietal development. Is suggested to inculcate and correlate the teaching research and extension.
Dr S. N Roy, addressed the programme, emphasised on overall development of university. He put a light on four pillar of the Agriculture Education such as Teaching, Research, Extension and Training. He assured the support in all the aspects of the agricultural education. He suggested the new faculty to publish the research articles and write the projects for the external funding which will directly or indirectly helps the helps the personal and institutional development.
Dr Anshuman Kohli. Director IQAC, emphasised on time management for the different responsibilities in the university. He stressed down the equitability of the work and curricula. He suggested to look for the value-added courses and skill development on various platforms. Such as YouTube, Moocs, Swayam, etc, He suggested new faculties to think, how to improve the teaching methods such as blended teaching method, flip classroom method etc., how to evaluate the student’s performance and research sharing and networking.
Dr, A. K Saha, DeanAgriculture BAU, Sabour, Dressed the function and importance of the orientation and workshops to the young minds. He suggested, how to modulate the teaching in the grooming the next generation and suggested to develop E content and adopt new teaching methodologies.

Day 1: Technical Session I (Dr P. K Singh):15-05-2024.
Gave detailed introduction and jurisdictions of university. briefed about agroclimatic zones, potentialities and cropping systems of Bihar. Explained Mandate crops of the university and research areas where we need to emphasis. Research needs to start from definition of the problem, plant breeding as current evaluation of crops. Suggested new faculties, for the conceptualise the research review of literature is very, important. Explained the detailed procedure of conducting AICRP trials, Registration and notification of variety.
He briefed about the procedure of submission of research proposals in the university, suggested to follow citizen chart and time bond for the submission, etc Suggested to work in collaboration with multidiscipline suggestion to visit university website and have a glance of the departmental research and ongoing research projects.
Day 1: Technical session II (Dr Gopala Krishnan S):
He inspired the young scientist with his vast experience in ICAR as a scientist. He worked on Basmati Rice more than a decade. Explained how new challenges create new opportunities. The interacted with the new scientists about research and correlated with, rice research. Encouraged new minds, by sharing his experience of difficulties faced during working in different institutes.
Day 1: Technical session III (Dr Sanjay Kumar):
Introduced undergraduate postgraduate and PhD programmes rules and regulations, from the registration to completion of the degree programme. Explain the examination pattern, the university follows, Evaluation and grading system. Put a light on. Different courses teaching in the undergraduate postgraduate and the PhD programmes and respective credit hours.
Day 1: Technical session IV (Dr Birender Singh):
Introduced the agriculture extension system of the university. Elaborated how the university transferring the technologies to end users i.e farmers. Introduced about university media cell, you tube channel, university website and other social media platforms which are being used for the dissemination of information from the university.
Day 2: Technical session I (Interaction with Expert): 16-05-2024;
All the new scientists interacted with expert and expert cleared the many doubts of young minds in teaching, research and extension. Expert triggered the scientist’s mind to think, why the private sector is having upper hand in few crops research. Dr Chetana C K and Dr Avinash Jha tried to tackle the question with rice and maize as example respectively. Dr T Chattopadhyay asked the expert regarding the importance of preprint during the publication. Expert suggested that, if it is innovative then suggested to go for patent before than preprint. It was discussed on maize improvement, as Bihar one of the leading states, but kharif season have very less production than rabi maize. Suggested to think and work in the direction of improving kharif maize production. Suggested that, in any crop improvement program, scientists should classify the traits in to ‘must have’ and ‘can have’ traits.
Day 2: Technical session II (Dr Rafat Sultana): 16-05-2024;
Gave introduction about pulse improvement in the university and Dr Sanjay Kumar explained types of research and procedure following in different pulses in the department. Dr Gopal Krishnana S, Expert appreciated the work done and suggested suitable and possible modification in the research program followed in the department, viz., 1. Suggested to carryout two crops in a year 2. Collaborate or develop sick plot in the premises 3. Go for MAS and QTL mapping in pulse (chickpea) improvement. Suggested to utilise the AICRP developed lines in the research which will help to authenticate the phenotype data and for further improvement.
Day 2: Technical session III (Dr Sima Sinha): 16-05-2024;
Gave introduction about oil seed crop improvement in the university. Explained types of research and procedure following in oilseed crops improvement in the department.Dr Gopal Krishnana S, Expert appreciated the work done and suggested suitable and possible modification in the research program followed in the department for oil seed crops improvement.
Day 2: Technical session IV (Ms Sheya Sen): 16-05-2024;
Briefed about all types of maize improvement ongoing in the university. Explained types of research and procedure following in maize crop improvement in the department.Dr Gopal Krishnana S, Expert appreciated the work done and suggested suitable and possible modification in the research program followed in the department for maize improvement.
Day 2: Technical session V (Dr S P Singh): 16-05-2024;
Explained in detail regarding research activities going on in the department with respect to rice. Explained about GI of Katharni rice, and improvement of the Katharni. Expert appreciated and suggested possible research changes and next improvement steps.
Day 2: Technical session VI (Dr Satyendra Tomar): 16-05-2024;
Explained about PPV and FR act procedure and university rules and regulations regarding PPV and FRA. Briefed about the university achievements of GI of Katharni rice and genome saviour awards to many farmers etc.,
Day 2: Valedictory Function: 16-05-2024
The orientation was completed with valedictory remark of Dr A. K Saha, Dean Agriculture BAU, Sbaour, Bhagalpur. Dr T Chattopadhyay summarised the two days event to expert and Dean. Dr Anshuman Kohli, Director IQAC, BAU Sabour, gave his remark about the orientation program and reminded the duties of teachers and scientists. Expert Dr Gopal Krishnan S, Head, Division of Genetics, IARI, New Delhi, summarised the two days’ workshop interactions with new scientist participants. Dr P K Singh Chairman, Department of PBG, BAC Sabour, appreciated the interaction with expert and suggested to imbibe the techniques/suggestions in the future research activities. Dr A. K Saha, Dean Agriculture BAU, Sbaour, Bhagalpur, gave his concluding remarks on the two days orientation workshop.
Dr T Chattopadhyay, organizing secretory of orientation 2024, hosted the two days program and Dr Mankesh Assistant Professor cum Junior Scientist, PBG, BAC, Sabour gave formal vote of thanks.

- Sick plot establishment: Dr Gopal Krishnan S, suggested to scientists to establish sick plots of major diseases for major crops.
- In Vitro screening: suggested to adopt invitro screening of diseases with root dip method or seed dip method artificially for disease screening.
- For insect resistance screening, suggested to established vector raring units with collaboration of entomologist an
- Suggested work on many abiotic stresses such of drought at different stages of plant growth by adopting different techniques.
- Suggested to handle the segregating and maintenance and adopt maintenance breeding in self- and cross-pollinated crops.
